Message to the Designer in all of us: Wood Flooring is Far from Boring

by liambailey on January 26, 2010

Hardwood or solid wood flooring sounds really quite boring. Laymen must imagine planks of boring old wood laid across the floor for no other possible reason than the owner choosing practicality and life expectancy over appearance and artistic flair.

While we forgive people, especially interior designers for making this mistaken assumption, at the same time we feel it is our duty to dispel these ancient myths.

Far from being un-malleable and purely practical, hardwood is one of the most versatile floor coverings known to man. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen wood flooring of various shades covering a floor in the form of a roman-style mosaic. This can simply be a mixed species standard mosaic as pictured to the left, or it could be depicting anything from a floral pattern to an African safari landscape.

But even that isn’t enough for some people. Check out the images below, which shows printed wood flooring (left) and Jigsaw Puzzle flooring (right):

These are some ideas that we found on the web in a very short space of time. The message here is that wood doesn’t need to be boring; it can be from as mildly different from to as whacky as you want it to be.

To us a standard wood floor is the most beautiful thing in the world, all shiny and wholesome. But it is amazing the different look it has simply by putting a cross shape through it in either the same or a different species, and either from mid-wall to mid-wall or from corner to corner.

Then it is different again if you use that cross as a divider between different effects, either the boards laid at a different angle, or even a different species of wood at different or the same angle. We don’t recommend painting our beautiful wood floors, but you guys are the designers; imagine a cross from corner to corner splitting up a white wood and a black wood floors, or even a ying yang shape all in real wood. Stunning!

The world is your oyster. All the while you have the knowledge that — if properly cared for — the floor you lay is a floor for life.
